Carmelo Anthony Tells the Pistons to Give Jalen Duren His Bread

Carmelo Anthony has a simple message for the Detroit Pistons: pay Jalen Duren. The NBA legend weighed in on the stalled contract talks, as first reported by ClutchPoints, and he did not mince words.

“Give him 5-years, $287M… Give this man his bread,” Anthony said. “Don’t break this up over a couple of dollars.”

That is a big number. Duren reportedly already said no to a five-year, $200 million extension from Detroit, so the two sides are still a long way apart.

Melo’s point is that the Pistons have something rare on their hands. Duren is just 22, and he is coming off the best season of his career.

In 2025-26 he became an All-Star for the first time and landed on the All-NBA Third Team. He put up 19.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and 2.0 assists a night while hitting 65 percent of his shots.

So why is Detroit hesitating? The playoffs. Over 14 postseason games, Duren’s numbers dipped to 10.2 points and 8.5 rebounds. In the season-ending loss to Cleveland, he managed only seven points and nine boards.

The IAHHM Take

“Give this man his bread” is the most Melo sentence ever spoken, and he has a point. Young centers who make All-NBA do not grow on trees, and Detroit finally has a core worth building around with Cade Cunningham running the show.

Melo’s warning is less about one contract and more about momentum. Teams that spent years rebuilding cannot afford to let a cornerstone walk over a gap in the numbers.

Still, the Pistons’ caution is not crazy. A $287 million deal is a massive bet, and that playoff drop-off is real. The front office has to decide whether that was growing pains or a warning sign.

Either way, this saga is not going away quietly. If talks drag into the season, every Duren game becomes a referendum on his price tag.

So where do you stand: should Detroit give Duren his bread, or is $287 million too rich after that postseason?
