Anthony Edwards is not trying to be a point guard, and now he doesn’t have to be. At Timberwolves media day, Ant made it clear that having LaMelo Ball in Minnesota takes a load off his shoulders, as first reported by ClutchPoints.
“I feel like I’m a natural two-guard at heart. I never thought I could develop any point guard skills,” Edwards said.
He then gave the punchline: “I know [Chris Finch] harps on me passing the ball, but we got LaMelo; I’m happy.”
Minnesota landed Ball in a blockbuster with the Charlotte Hornets this summer. According to Sky Sports, the Wolves got Ball and Josh Green, while Charlotte took back Naz Reid plus a stack of picks and pick swaps.
The move changes Minnesota’s whole identity. The Wolves were built big and physical. With LaMelo running the offense, expect them to push the pace.
It also fills a hole that has been sitting there for a while. Mike Conley is now in Boston, and the Rob Dillingham experiment ended when he was shipped to Chicago in the Ayo Dosunmu deal.
The IAHHM Take
Charlotte, you know exactly what Minnesota is getting. LaMelo was an All-Star in a Hornets jersey in 2022, and last season he put up 20.1 points and 7.1 assists while helping the Hornets jump to 44 wins, per Sky Sports.
That is what makes this one sting a little in the Queen City. The guy who made Hornets games must-watch is now feeding one of the league’s most explosive scorers.
On paper, the fit is clean. Ant is a bucket-getter first, averaging over four assists for his career. Ball is a natural setup man who averages over seven dimes. One creates, one finishes, and both can do a little of everything.
If Edwards gets to play off the catch more often, his scoring numbers could get scary. And LaMelo now plays for a team with real playoff expectations.
The question for Carolina fans: are you rooting for LaMelo and Ant in Minnesota, or is it still too soon?
