Five Top-Seven Teams Lost on the Same Day: College Football’s Week 7 Was Historic Chaos

College football’s Week 7 didn’t just get weird. It got historic. Five of the AP Top 25’s seven highest-ranked teams lost on Saturday, and as ClutchPoints reported, citing Stathead, five teams ranked inside the AP top seven had never all lost on the same day since the poll began in 1936.

The Damage Report

  • No. 1 Georgia fell 27-24 at home to unranked Auburn on an Alex McPherson field goal as time expired.
  • No. 2 Notre Dame lost 28-24 at No. 8 BYU after a late comeback push came up short.
  • No. 5 Indiana saw its 22-game winning streak end in a close Big Ten fight with No. 4 Ohio State.
  • No. 6 Alabama dropped a 26-19 decision to No. 14 Tennessee.
  • No. 7 Texas lost 27-24 to unranked Florida, with a late Arch Manning fumble in the middle of it.

The IAHHM Take

This is the stuff that makes college football the best regular season in sports. Georgia, Notre Dame and Indiana all walked in unbeaten and walked out with a loss on the same afternoon. When the new poll drops, expect the top of it to look like somebody shook the board, and CBS Sports is already making the case for BYU at No. 1.

We flagged the Notre Dame danger zone yesterday when Stephen A. Smith said the Irish had no excuse to lose. Provo had other plans.

An October loss doesn’t end anybody’s season in the Playoff era, but it shrinks the margin for error fast. Georgia and Alabama now have to survive the SEC grind with a blemish, and Texas is staring at real questions on offense.

So who’s your No. 1 right now, and which of these five fallen teams is in the most trouble? Let us hear it.
