Will Stein Just Did Something No Kentucky Football Coach Has Done in 100 Years

No. 15 Kentucky beat Oklahoma 21-13 on Saturday night, and first-year head coach Will Stein made program history in the process. Per an SEC Network post highlighted by ClutchPoints, Stein is the first Kentucky head coach in more than 100 years to win six of his first seven games.

The Wildcats had to earn it. They trailed 13-7 after three quarters, then scored 14 unanswered points in the fourth while the defense shut Oklahoma out the rest of the way. Quarterback Kenny Minchey went 21 of 28 for 158 yards and two touchdowns, both to Willie Rodriguez.

The IAHHM Take

Kentucky is a basketball school. Everybody knows that. But 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the SEC in Year 1 of a new coach is the kind of start that changes how a fan base spends its fall Saturdays. And this didn’t happen in a quiet week. It happened on the same day five AP top-seven teams went down, which means the SEC pecking order is wide open.

The comeback matters too. Young teams with first-year coaches usually fold when they’re down in the fourth. This one finished. That says a lot about the culture Stein is building in Lexington.

Next up, Kentucky hosts Vanderbilt on Oct. 24 at 7:30 p.m. ET. Is this a real SEC contender, or a hot start that cools in November? Let us know where you stand.
