Bear Bachmeier Said Notre Dame ‘Disrespected’ His Family, Then Beat Them Three Different Ways

BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier threw for a touchdown, ran for two more and caught one himself as the No. 8 Cougars knocked off No. 2 Notre Dame 28-24 on Saturday. Then he explained why it felt personal.

“Notre Dame disrespected me and my family pretty badly, and I wasn’t going to lose to those guys,” Bachmeier said after the game, as reported by ClutchPoints. He was talking about how the Irish treated him coming out of high school.

The Stat Line

Per ClutchPoints, Bachmeier went 23 of 36 for 224 yards and a touchdown through the air, added 45 rushing yards and two scores on 13 carries, and caught a touchdown pass. He became the first BYU quarterback in 30 years with both a rushing and a receiving touchdown in the same game. The win was BYU’s first over Notre Dame since 2004 and only its second ever against a top-two team.

The IAHHM Take

Every player remembers who passed on them, and the best ones keep receipts. Bachmeier didn’t just beat the program he felt slighted by. He did it with his arm, his legs and his hands, then said exactly what was on his mind. That’s the kind of energy that turns a good season into a run.

It also caps one of the wildest days the sport has ever seen: five AP top-seven teams lost on the same Saturday. And it makes Stephen A. Smith’s pregame warning to the Irish look like prophecy.

BYU is unbeaten and has a real Playoff case now. Is Bachmeier the most underrated quarterback in the country? Sound off.
