WHERE DOES DRAKE RANK IN YOUR BEST OVERALL RAPPER LIST? WHAT DO YOU THINK THE PUSHA T BEEF DID FOR BOTH PARTIES?
Drake is making his case, he’s not the GOAT yet but he’s definitely taking his ascension to take that title in my eyes. Now as far as the Pusha T beef, Drake was just a casualty of war. Pusha’s beef was deeper than just drake it stemmed back to Baby and Cash Money, but Drake was in the line of fire; Pusha won .. Pusha is always going to win because he addressed bro straight up and Drake addressed Kanye subliminally ……. Hip hop has gotten soft lol. Pusha won; Pusha didn’t get anything from it but the backlash from a soft ass generation of rappers.
FAVORITE PROJECT OR SONG SO FAR THIS YEAR?
Favorite song right now is a tie between Stop Snitchen – YG and Down Bad – Dreamville
FAVORITE HIP HOP GROUP OF ALL TIME?
Outkast hands down
WHAT HAS THE HARDEST OBSTACLE AS AN INDEPENDENT RECORDING ARTIST BEEN?
finding a balance between fighting who you want to be and fighting this battle to survive period. It’s a deep feeling; I’m not complaining by any means but finding balance whether it’s between what’s fake and what’s real kind of kills your motivation so you have to find your balance…
WHAT PLATFORM ARE YOU USING TO DISTRIBUTE YOUR MUSIC AND WHY?
Distrokid and Jelani set it all up and invested in me so I trust his vision with how that part of the music.
WHAT IS YOUR STANCE ON KANYE WEST?
We lost the Kanye everyone accepted when Kanye lost his mother…. Kanye is one of the greatest artists of our generation; I think that he constantly screams for help in so many ways, but people are so judgmental that they don’t hear him. Kanye has helped me find myself in many situations just based on his music, he’s still Ye’ he’s a fucking genius so my stance is to stand by Kanye; at least to give him a chance to explain what he does… I’m pretty sure if people stop trynna play God with their judgments they’ll see this man is human just like we are.
HOW MANY ARTISTS HAVE YOU COLLABORATED WITH LOCALLY?
About 4 maybe 5 at the moment
HOW SERIOUS ARE YOU ABOUT MAKING A LIVING FROM MUSIC? ARE YOU A STUDENT OF THE GAME?
Now it’s a hobby, I’m serious enough to keep putting my free time into and see where it goes. I try to keep my hopes at bay, so I won’t be upset if something doesn’t pan out but I’m deff excited af. And I study parts of the game; I try not to get too into it because it’s forever changing. I guess that’s a yes lol.
WHAT IS LACKING IN HIP HOP MUSIC THAT YOU THINK YOU CAN CHANGE?
Substance … its already working its way back but I feel like I can bring substance mixed with a little bit of passion … its reassuring to hip hop lovers.
IN ORDER, RANK YOUR TOP 5 PRODUCERS IN THE GAME RIGHT NOW?
ANDERSON PAAK (DARK HORSE)
FAVORITE ALBUM SO FAR THIS YEAR?
I don’t have one at the moment … I’m still listening to Victory Lap. Its not my favorite but Boogie’s – Everythings for Sale is clutch too.
IN ORDER, RANK YOUR TOP 5 RAPPERS IN THE GAME
Jay – Z
Cole / Kendrick
IF YOU COULD COLLABORATE WITH ANY SINGER MALE OR FEMALE FOR A JOINT ALBUM WHO WOULD IT BE?
DO YOU THINK THE STREAMING ERA IS HURTING OR BENEFITING ARTISTS THESE DAYS?
- I think it’s benefiting; whether a good or bad artist, everyone is being heard.
WHAT WOULD YOUR ADVICE BE TO ASPIRING ARTISTS FROM YOUR AREA?
If you want something go get it, don’t let anyone tell you you can’t be something… I went and tried to be something that intimated a lot of people, now people are going to always say what you can’t do … fuck them. Be you.
Where are you from?
The great state of Virginia.
-How did the crew get started?
It just happened … we all knew were talented music-wise; hell the first time I met Phelps we freestyled together in our dorm room.
-When and how did you get into music?
My whole life honestly, I remember when I was like 12 or 13 I would sit in front of my mom stereo instead of being outside with the rest of the kids. My mom had a pretty decent taste in music so it was a plethora of neo-soul/hip hop type music; real music.
-How did you choose your rap name?
It’s what my mom named me; Jerry. Wayne – Jerry Wayne Hairston Jr. its who I am. And it’s an ode to two of my favorite rappers / Kendrick and Wayne. Kdot .. Wayne
How will you change the industry?
My goal isn’t to change the industry but to join what already happening; revitalize and give the industry real music; something people can feel and relate to.
-Who is in your mainstream top 5?
-What motivated or inspired you to record your last project?
I was in a situation where people revealed who they were, while I was following my heart and my passion people abused that and used it. I was in an extremely dark place mentally and needed an outlet; I needed to vent. So that motivated me to put things on wax; to speak my truths hence the if you know you know. I won’t lie I believe that to be redundant so if you know what I am and who I am then you understand.
-Has there been any time in your journey where you felt like pursuing something else instead of music?
Every day, I cook for a living. I came to charlotte to be a chef so that is always what comes first and foremost because of the easiness to get a check. I’m lost with what it does to those who are passionate, but I held on to music so much that it’s easy to share; another one of my passions. Nobody can take this from me… this is me.
Whose side were you on. Biggie Or Pac?
Growing up it used to be Pac, the bravado almost unstoppable energy it had caught my attention but as I got older and started to grow an ear for lyricism it was Biggie who sparked a fire. I really can’t be on any side regarding these two because I have a deep deep feeling that these two brothers cared for one another more than what is told. There is always more to a story than what the people who are here are left to say. This is one of those situations in my eyes; we lost two kings… there isn’t any side.
If you had one song of yours to perform on national tv which would it be?
It would be a mix between Amortentia and Maria, people don’t really know the meaning of amortentia so I would perform that one so people could see the artist that I am and what I like. The whole song is an ode to Harry Potter which I love. Secondly Maria; the day we made it ( me and Phelps) w the assistance of our close friend Chaux we just vibed and it was an amazing feeling. That day was great.
If you were offered a perfect distribution/sponsorship from every major company in America which company would suit you and your brand the most?
-What is your favorite movie? Favorite actor?
Any of the Friday movies and it’s a tie with the Madea Plays
Actor – Will Smith
-Tell me some of your biggest and/or most enjoyable moments so far?
I really don’t share too much about my personal accomplishments because I’m a very private individual. I, my brother is my biggest accomplishment; seeing him succeed in life is the greatest feeling bro like if you know you know… that kid is an amazing man. Family is involved in all my enjoyable moments so ill just leave it there.
-What equipment and software do you use to record/produce?
Garageband and I’m in the process of learning how to engineer my own music using ProTools and FruityLoops Studios. I also just recently been working with a program called Reaper which is a clutch.
-Name 3 things that make you unique as an artist?
-I don’t write
-I love music, not what comes from being around it.
-Where do you see yourself going with this? What are your big plans?
The big plans is to change what people clearly don’t know about me… I’m talented, in many areas than just one. I think that me telling myself when I came to Charlotte in 2015 that I wanted to be a Sous Chef and I achieved that but once it was over there really wasn’t anything I could set my mind to because I had put a cap on what I was capable of. So I see myself being successful, a pioneer to those who feel like people always doubt you …
-Any projects in the works?
Always, there are a few tapes I’m working on with PCPTheLabel so just stay woke and watch.
-What are your rates for features?
One day I look forward to having a rate, right now the rate is energy … if I can feel what you got going on and the vibe is there you wouldn’t have to pay me to get on a track … in the future that’ll change but I promise to not tax someone for sharing their passion.
-What’s the best way to get in contact with you if we need work done?
My homie Jelani, he knows me and like I said I’m a private individual so hit his line.
