The Broncos Beat Seattle With 168 Yards, and Sam Darnold Isn’t Sugarcoating It

The Denver Broncos beat the Seattle Seahawks 17-14 in overtime on Thursday Night Football, and they did it with just 168 yards of total offense.

Seattle had clawed back from a 14-3 fourth-quarter hole. George Holani punched in a rushing touchdown, Rashid Shaheed converted the two-pointer, and a field goal tied it at 14. Then overtime went sideways. A holding penalty on the kickoff return backed Seattle up to its own 11, and on third-and-7, Sam Darnold threw an interception to Ja’Quan McMillian. Wil Lutz drilled a 53-yarder to end it, as first reported by ClutchPoints.

Darnold finished 27-of-51 for 278 yards with two picks. His postgame verdict: “There’s no way to sugarcoat it, that one sucked.”

The IAHHM Take

This might be the weirdest win of the NFL season. Seattle outgained Denver 353 to 168. According to Andrew Mason, cited by ClutchPoints, the Broncos had been 0-12 all-time when gaining fewer than 175 yards and allowing at least 350. Since 2010, teams in that spot were 2-109.

How’d they pull it off? Defense. Denver racked up five sacks and three takeaways while playing without Patrick Surtain II and Talanoa Hufanga. That’s a unit that can carry you in January. The offense, though? That’s a real problem for a team with playoff hopes.

On the other side, Jaxon Smith-Njigba did his part again: 12 catches for 134 yards. Through six games he has 49 catches, 717 yards and seven touchdowns, and Doug Clawson of CBS Sports noted he has accounted for a record 35 percent of Seattle’s scrimmage yards, per ClutchPoints.

The defending Super Bowl LX champs are now 3-3, with the undefeated Chiefs coming to Seattle in Week 7. Is this a slump, or are the champs in real trouble? Sound off.
