Flavor Flav Wrote WNBA Fans a Work Excuse for Today’s 12:30 Finals Tipoff

Game 6 of the WNBA Finals between the Atlanta Dream and the Golden State Valkyries tips off at 12:30 p.m. ET today, smack in the middle of the workday. So Flavor Flav did what only Flavor Flav would do: he wrote fans a note for the boss. AllHipHop first reported the mock excuse, which reads, “Thursday is a paid holiday. Because Flavor Flav said so.”

He signed it as “The World’s Greatest Hype Man” and “Official Supporter of Women’s Sports.” Game 6 is at State Farm Arena in Atlanta and airs on USA and Peacock. Fans had already been complaining that a Finals game landed in a lunch-hour slot instead of prime time.

The IAHHM Take

Laugh if you want, but Flav’s women’s sports support isn’t a bit. Back in July he organized SHE Weekend in Las Vegas, bringing about 150 female Winter Olympians and Paralympians to the city with help from MGM Resorts, Delta and Dove. His fundraiser for those athletes passed $133,000, and Public Enemy performed. That’s a hip hop pioneer putting real money and real access behind women athletes.

The note also lands a real point. The WNBA is in the biggest moment in its history, and a Finals game at 12:30 on a Thursday makes it harder for working fans to watch. Hip hop has always been the culture that shows up for the underdog, and Flav is reminding the league that the fans are ready if the TV windows are.

Hip hop and hoops have always been family. Peep how Jay-Z is headed to the Super Bowl LXI halftime stage, and now the hype man is running point for the W. Are you watching Game 6 from your desk, or are you using the Flav excuse?
