The Chicago Bears ended the New England Patriots’ three-game winning streak on Thursday Night Football, winning 30-24 at Soldier Field, and second-year receiver Luther Burden III was the loudest man in the building. As first reported by ClutchPoints, Burden finished with 4 catches for 130 yards and his first touchdown of the season.
That score came on a 24-yard pass from Caleb Williams with 14 seconds left in the first half, and Chicago went into the locker room up 20-7. The Bears never gave up the lead after that.
Asked about his “Problem Child” nickname, Burden kept it short: “When I get the ball, it’s gonna be a problem.”
The IAHHM Take
That line hits different when you back it up. Through seven games, the 22-year-old former two-time All-SEC First Team pick has 31 catches on 48 targets for 361 yards, and more than a third of that yardage came in one prime-time night. That’s how a player goes from “nice depth piece” to somebody defensive coordinators circle on the call sheet.
The night also had a redemption story. Kicker Cairo Santos hit the post on a 53-yard try with a little over eight minutes left, which gave New England the ball at its own 43. The defense forced a three-and-out, and Santos came back out and drilled a 58-yarder, the longest field goal of his 13-year career, per ClutchPoints. “The misses annoy me, but like I can clear it so quick,” Santos said, via Adam Jahns of CHGO Sports.
Short memory for the kicker, big plays from the young receiver, and a coach in Ben Johnson who isn’t scared to empty the playbook. Chicago is now 5-2 and heads to Seattle in Week 8 looking for a third straight win.
So be honest: are the Bears a real NFC threat, or is it still too early to buy in? Tell us in the comments.
