Shannon Sharpe on the Rams’ OT Loss: Trust Stafford, Not the Kicker

Shannon Sharpe watched the Rams’ overtime loss to Buffalo and kept it simple: let the quarterback cook. After Harrison Mevis’ overtime field goal try got blocked in a 37-34 loss to the Bills on Monday Night Football, Unc took to X with a blunt verdict, as first reported by ClutchPoints: “I would’ve trusted Stafford. Don’t trust this kicker.”

Why Sharpe Has a Point

Matthew Stafford was rolling all night. He threw for 383 yards and three touchdowns with no turnovers, and Puka Nacua set a career high with 17 catches, per the Associated Press. Stafford drove LA to the Buffalo 30 in overtime, and then the Rams handed it to the kicking unit. Greg Rousseau got a hand on it, and Tyler Bass won it for Buffalo with a 45-yarder on the next drive.

Mevis’ season numbers back up the worry. ClutchPoints has him at 5-for-9 on field goals through five games, and he also missed a 50-yarder in regulation Monday. Rams head coach Sean McVay didn’t dodge it either, telling reporters the special teams “cost us the game tonight.”

The IAHHM Take

Here’s the other side: Mevis is the same kicker who drilled a 42-yard overtime winner against the Bears in last January’s divisional round. The undrafted Missouri product told reporters he felt like he “hit it good” and that it’s a next-play mentality from here.

But Sharpe’s real point is about trust. When your 38-year-old franchise QB is slicing up a 4-1 team, you take the extra shot at the end zone instead of leaning on a kicker who is 0-for-2 on the night. At 2-3, the Rams don’t have room for many more of these. Arizona comes to SoFi next.
