The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Las Vegas Raiders 30-27 on Sunday, but the win came at a heavy cost. Wide receiver Tyquan Thornton suffered a serious left ankle injury late in the fourth quarter, and Patrick Mahomes’ first words afterward were for him. “First off, I’m just praying for him. Hopefully he comes back healthy,” Mahomes said, as first reported by ClutchPoints.
What Happened
Thornton was hurt at the end of a 55-yard catch from Mahomes when his lower left leg bent under a defender. Medical staff put his leg in an air cast and carted him off. It was the worst ending to the best game of his career. He had five catches for 111 yards and two touchdowns. He entered the game with six career catches for 108 yards, per CBS Sports.
Andy Reid didn’t sugarcoat it. “Tyquan Thornton’s ankle, that doesn’t look good,” Reid said, via Sports Illustrated. He added that Thornton would fly back with the team for more tests and called him a “great father, great husband.”
The IAHHM Take
This one hurts. Thornton finally broke out, the kind of day a player waits years for, and it ended on a cart. Hopefully the tests come back better than the replay looked.
Football-wise, Kansas City has a real problem. Rashee Rice also left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury, so the receiver room is thin heading into Week 5. Mahomes has made a lot out of a little before, but he’ll have to do it again.
