The Dallas Cowboys will most likely be without starting cornerback Cobie Durant when they face the Houston Texans on Sunday, Oct. 4, as first reported by ClutchPoints.
Head coach Brian Schottenheimer didn’t sound hopeful. According to Cowboys beat reporter Joseph Hoyt, Schottenheimer said Durant “probably won’t be ready” for the Week 4 matchup.
Durant hurt his hamstring in the Week 2 win over the Washington Commanders. He went down covering Terry McLaurin in the end zone, and things got worse when safety Markquese Bell accidentally stepped on him while he was still on the turf.
He hasn’t practiced since. Dallas already ruled him out for Week 3, and Schottenheimer said back then that the recovery would take multiple weeks.
The timing hurts. Backup Shavon Revel is also dealing with a knee issue, which could push third-stringer Ameer Speed into a starting role opposite DaRon Bland, per CBS Sports. Dallas also brought in several players for workouts this week as it looks for secondary depth.
The IAHHM Take
This one hits close to home. Durant was born and raised in Lamar, South Carolina, and played his college ball at South Carolina State before the Rams took him in the fourth round of the 2022 draft, per his Wikipedia profile.
After four seasons in L.A., he signed a one-year, $4 million deal with Dallas, a prove-it contract for a player who can line up in multiple spots. He was off to a solid start too, with two solo tackles and a forced fumble in his first two games in a Cowboys uniform.
That’s what makes this frustrating. A one-year deal is all about stacking good tape, and a lingering hamstring takes those reps away. For an HBCU product trying to cement himself as a starter, every Sunday counts.
Now the question is how a thin Dallas secondary holds up against Houston without him, and whether Durant can get back on the field before his window to make a statement closes.
Can the Cowboys’ cornerback room survive Sunday without Durant, or is this secondary in real trouble?
