Coach Kevin O’Connell’s Minnesota Vikings took on Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears in Week 2 action without injured Kyler Murray, who got an encouraging update. Fans expected a high-scoring game, but it ended with a 9-3 final score in favor of the Vikings, whose Dallas Turner-led defense was on the field during a disastrous Caleb Williams injury.
After the game, Turner was asked about Williams’ non-contact right hamstring injury, which occurred on a bootleg with just over seven minutes left in the game.
“I feel like he probably has the best escapability in the NFL (if) you ask me, but you know it’s definitely a fun challenge going against a guy like that and I hope he gets healthy,” said to reporter Stacey Dales. “I mean, I took a knee and I prayed for him you know, I didn’t like to see a guy like that down.”
Turner’s defense forced a fumble and an interception by the Williams-led Bears offense, holding them to 297 total yards and just three points just days after they put 59 on the scoreboard against the Carolina Panthers. Bears coach Ben Johnson’s dream of having the NFL’s top-scoring offense of all-time took a major hit as Turner and the Brian Flores-led Vikings defense put on a masterclass.
Turner made a game-clinching sack on the rush against Colston Loveland, with no time on the clock, showing that football games can be won in a wide variety of ways. Fans may have come for the offense, but they stayed for the type of savage defense that Flores’ group has made its calling card.
In a division with high-scoring teams like the Bears, Lions, and Packers, it may give the Vikings a leg up and an inside track to their first division title since 2022.
