Defensive masterminds thrive on suffocating opposing offenses, but Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald just oversaw a defensive performance for the history books.
During the Seahawks’ dominant 31-7 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at State Farm Stadium, Macdonald’s unit completely neutralized Arizona’s passing attack. Following the game, reporter Theo Mackie highlighted a mind-boggling historical stat on X formerly Twitter that put the sheer extent of Seattle’s defensive lockdown into perspective.
“Today was the first time the Cardinals did not complete a pass for 10+ yards since Oct. 11, 1987,” Mackie posted. “Their replacement players beat the Saints in that game despite completing three passes for 11 yards. It was their last season in St. Louis.”
To hold a modern NFL offense without a single completion of 10 or more yards for nearly four decades is almost unthinkable. Macdonald’s unit rendered the Cardinals completely toothless, limiting them to a paltry 150 total yards on the afternoon and holding them scoreless after the first quarter. Seattle closed the contest by scoring 24 unanswered points to claim its 10th consecutive victory over its NFC West rival.
While the defense dialed up unrelenting pressure, backup quarterback Drew Lock handled business on the other side of the ball. Filling in for injured starter Sam Darnold, Lock completed 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns. All three scoring strikes went to star wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who put on a clinic with nine receptions for 155 yards, highlighted by an explosive 82-yard touchdown on Seattle’s second offensive play.
Macdonald took over the Seahawks with a reputation as one of football’s sharpest defensive architects. Forcing an NFL offense into a stat line not seen since replacement players were on the field in 1987 is yet another glowing feather in his coaching cap.
