Former Florida State and Boston College quarterback Thomas Castellanos has entered the transfer portal after a Kentucky judge granted him an injunction allowing him to compete for a fifth college season, with Texas Tech among the early schools to watch for Castellanos, per On3’s Pete Nakos.
Castellanos was among 13 football and basketball players who filed a lawsuit in Kentucky seeking immediate portal access. The dispute centers on eligibility rules affecting athletes who entered college in 2022. A federal judge in Colorado previously granted an injunction allowing most athletes from that high school class to return for another season, but that ruling did not create a transfer portal window. Castellanos sought the ability to transfer because the Seminoles did not have a roster spot available after adding Auburn quarterback Ashton Daniels. Kentucky Judge Brian Edwards issued the ruling Friday.
The 2022 three-star recruit originally signed with UCF before transferring to Boston College, where he started during the 2023 and 2024 seasons. He then moved to Florida State for the 2025 campaign.
Across 38 career games at UCF, Boston College and Florida State, Castellanos has thrown for 6,449 yards, 48 touchdowns and 28 interceptions. He has also accumulated 1,984 rushing yards and 24 rushing touchdowns. His rushing production included 1,113 yards during his sophomore season at Boston College.
Castellanos completed 58.3% of his passes for 2,760 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season at Florida State. He added 557 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground and finished as the nation’s No. 43 passer with a 143.5 rating.
His only season with the Seminoles included a major early-season win. Castellanos helped Florida State defeat then-No. 8 Alabama, 31-17, during the opening weekend. Florida State ultimately finished 5-7.
The Red Raiders have a clear need for additional quarterback depth after Cincinnati transfer Brendan Sorsby, the Texas Tech’s original portal addition at the position, left the program following treatment for a gambling addiction. Junior Will Hammond is expected to start, but he is recovering from an ACL injury suffered last October. Sophomore Lloyd Jones III is currently listed behind him and has attempted only five college passes.
Castellanos would therefore provide the Red Raiders with another experienced option. Texas Tech added 22 transfers this offseason, with their portal class ranking No. 6 nationally according to 247Sports, making quarterback depth particularly important as the team pursues its College Football Playoff aspirations.
