The Indianapolis Colts feature a heated quarterback battle during NFL Training Camp. For the right to backup Daniel Jones between Riley Leonard and Anthony Richardson that is.
Leonard arrives as the sixth round addition via the 2025 NFL Draft out of Notre Dame, where he came close to winning a national title. Richardson, though, flipped from Florida and SEC breakout star to potential first round flameout. Including demanding a trade during the offseason.
Leonard dropped some clarity on that battle with Richardson along with his relationship with the embattled passer Sunday.
“First and foremost, very grateful for the situation that I’m in. Obviously, later-round-pick guy, competing for the (No.) 2 job right now with Anthony (Richardson Sr.), who’s honestly a great friend of mine at this point,” Leonard began. “Just an awesome opportunity. Everyday I get out on the field I’m super grateful.”

However, Richardson shared some honest critique about his game especially following Sunday’s session.
“Sometimes I don’t throw the best ball, but I feel like my decision-making is pretty good so far in camp,” Richardson said. “It’s not my best camp. [But] it’s not my worst camp. I’m just trying to keep progressing.”
Richardson clearly is trying to make do with his time on the Colts while fueling trade talk. He’s now facing becoming the QB3 for head coach Shane Steichen. Perhaps a suddenly QB-needy team with an injury in the room could look into making a deal for Richardson down the road.
But for now, the QB2 battle has suddenly become scrutinized for Indy.
