In addition to being directed by a former HBCU alumnus, Michael also features an HBCU alumnus playing a member of the Jackson 5. Tennessee State alumnus Jamal Henderson made a huge splash in the hit feature film, playing Jermaine Jackson. Henderson proudly represents his HBCU, serving in student leadership as a member of Collegiate 100 and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.
In an interview with Tennessee State Newsroom, he spoke about how his HBCU prepared him for this moment.
“TSU taught me what it meant to be independent. It was my first time away from the comforts of my home, so I developed a strong sense of self-reliance and confidence in my own ability to adapt to any challenges that arose.”
To fully embody Jermaine, Henderson dove headfirst into months of intense preparation, meticulously studying Jackson’s iconic mannerisms and movements through endless performance footage and interviews. He even took up bass guitar lessons for several months to ensure every moment on stage felt authentic.
His performances with Jaafar Jackson were memorable for him as well.
“The standout moment for me was my first day of rehearsal, when we saw Jaafar (Jackson) rehearse ‘Billie Jean’ for the first time. It was electric and I couldn’t help but smile and bob my head as I watched him (Jaafar) glide across the floor. The feeling in the room was magical, and I knew I had to work twice as hard to ensure I wouldn’t let him or anyone else down on this project.”
Henderson joins director Antoine Fuqua as individuals with HBCU ties who were part of the creation of the Michael movie, which is in theaters now.
