The rich get richer, as the Los Angeles Rams will have Aaron Donald in the upcoming season after he announced on Sunday that he is coming out of retirement. He signed a one-year contract worth $20 million and was included in the 53-man roster.
Donald will team up with Myles Garrett to bring the pain on defense, while Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams will continue wreaking havoc on offense. It remains unclear how effective Donald will be after a two-year absence, but his comeback will surely give the Rams a boost.
The 35-year-old defensive tackle joined the Rams’ training camp to gauge his conditioning. Even during his retirement, he remained active with personal workouts, even sharing some videos on social media. But of course, the grind in the NFL is entirely different.
In a report from ESPN’s Sarah Barshop, Rams coach Sean McVay said they are still monitoring Donald’s readiness for Week 1.
“McVay said the Rams are still determining whether Donald will play in the season opener and will take it ‘one day at a time’ as they determine ‘whether or not we think it’s best to be able to play him in Australia,’” wrote Barshop.
The Rams will face the San Francisco 49ers at Melbourne Cricket Ground in Week 1 on September 10.
While fans are excited for the Super Bowl champion and three-time Defensive Player of the Year suiting up anew, McVay stressed that they are being extra conscientious about playing him.
“It’ll be something that we’ll kind of feel out one day at a time, and I think that’ll give us clarity as we just truly just stay in the moment and see what that looks like,” said McVay, as quoted by Barshop.
Donald, also an eight-time All-Pro and a 10-time Pro Bowler, admitted that the Rams’ acquisition of Garrett enticed him to return. Donald said he had long conversations with his wife before deciding to return.
