Interview: Upcoming NC Rapper Wavy Banx Talks New Album, Goals As An Artist & More

Tell us the inspiration behind your new project “Just Wavy”

Wavy: This project was honestly self-inspired.  I started looking for inspiration everywhere else and was unable to find it until I took matters into my own hands.  I had something I wanted to prove to myself so I got up and did it which is where the Title comes from. It was literally Just Wavy.

At what point did you decide to make music become your main career path?

Wavy: I knew it was time to make music my career path when I was making bread working what most would call a good job but was miserable inside.  I knew at that point it was time to pursue what I really loved to do and that was music.

What are some highlights of your journey so far?

Wavy: My biggest highlight so far would be one of my singles “My Fault” entering the top 50 for independent artists on internet radio last year.  That was huge for me with it being my first single that I really put a push behind.

What is your long-term goal as an artist?

Wavy: My long-term goal is to have a long-term career.  I want to be respected in the industry for being true to myself and making quality music but overall I want to create a platform for myself that puts me in a position to help others.

How do you keep the motivation flowing?

Wavy: Seeing my family still working is what keeps me motivated.  If they are still working, that means I have to go harder so they don’t have to.  That and having a real passion for music. I feel like everytime I step behind the Mic I get better so why stop.

How much time would you say you spend in the studio? & what are some imperative things that you need to have a successful session?

Wavy: I’m in the studio every day really.  Whether it’s my home setup or pulling up to a studio to record I make sure I keep my skills sharp.  I may not record every day but on days that I’m not recording, I’m either writing or sorting through beats.  All I really need for a successful session is the right beat I can catch a vibe to and it’s up from there.

What are some undying, undeniable collaborations you would accept when you get to mainstream status?

Wavy: 3 undeniable collaborations are definitely Wayne, J. Cole, and Kanye. Three legends in this game that I’ve been studying for years have all had long-term successful careers.  Just to be able to soak up the game from them would be a dope opportunity.  

What or who inspired your goal to be a professional recording artist?

Wavy: I definitely get inspired by other artists from a musical standpoint but when it comes to me actually wanting to be an artist I feel like I inspired myself.  It was something I have always had a passion for and I decided to take a chance and bet on myself.

Would you sign a record deal? Or are you into independence?

Wavy: In today’s world you hear all the time about how artists complain about their labels etc. everybody has their own situation that works for them.  Me, I like to move the way I like to and having ownership of my creations.  Being a new artist, I feel like I would be disrespecting myself by not at least giving myself a shot to see what I can do independently first.  I’m not opposed to a deal but things would have to make sense and the timing would have to be right.

What is your main goal in 2021?

Wavy: My main goal in 2021 is to stay consistent with my drops and to make a name for myself.  I have a vault full of unreleased content and now is the time to get it out
