Spurs forward Victor Wembanyama shoots a free throw

Wemby Drops 52, 24 and 8 Blocks, and Still Isn’t Satisfied

Victor Wembanyama just put up a stat line that looks fake: a career-high 52 points, 24 rebounds and eight blocks as the San Antonio Spurs held off the Dallas Mavericks 112-111 on Wednesday night, as first reported by ClutchPoints.

He needed every bit of it. San Antonio led by double digits going into the second half, then watched Dallas claw all the way back. The rest of the Spurs shot just 31.3% from the field, and the team went 5-of-36 from three. The win moves San Antonio to 6-2.

And the big fella? He walked off talking about what he did wrong. “I wish I set better screens towards the end and made more free throws,” Wembanyama told ESPN’s Katie George after the game.

The IAHHM Take

This is the scariest part. Fifty-two and 24 with eight blocks is the kind of night that ends up in a museum, and his first thought was screens and free throws. That’s a guy who expects to be the best player in the world, not a guy happy to be on a highlight reel.

We already saw him pull up as Geralt and drop a then-season-high 43 on the Wolves last weekend. Now he’s topped it by nine. The numbers keep climbing, but the real story is the supporting cast. Nobody wins many games where one player carries the scoring while the team shoots 5-of-36 from deep. If the shooters around him start hitting, the Spurs go from fun to dangerous.

So be honest: is Wemby already the most unguardable player in the league, or does San Antonio need to find him some help before we crown him?
