North Carolina A&T Athletics has released a statement on the postgame fight that broke out after the Aggies’ 13-10 homecoming win over Elon on Saturday, as first reported by ClutchPoints.
According to the school, “A brief fight ensued when the visiting team came to the home team’s side of the field.” Members of both coaching staffs broke it up, and A&T said the matter “was resolved after a joint review by officials from both schools.” CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio was at the game.
Athletic director Katreshia Louis-Verrett kept it measured: “College is a time to learn and grow, and we were glad to see that ultimately take place in this situation.”
What Happened on the Field
The game itself was a grinder. Quarterback Kevin White threw for 98 yards and a touchdown and ran for 95 more on 14 carries, including a 39-yard burst. His 8-yard scoring toss to Jayvone Dillard tied it early in the third quarter, and Asher Holland’s field goal with 2:18 left proved to be the game-winner. A&T sealed it with a sack of the Elon quarterback in the final seconds. That’s three straight wins for the Aggies.
Head coach Shawn Gibbs didn’t hide his frustration, telling the Greensboro News & Record, “That was an ugly ending to our moment, and that’s what really made me mad.”
The IAHHM Take
This was supposed to be all about A&T’s 100th GHOE, a once-in-a-lifetime weekend for Aggie Nation. The team did its part on the field. The broadcast crew was clear that A&T didn’t start it, and the school responded with class instead of fueling the fire.
Now the focus has to stay on the bigger picture. Three straight wins is real momentum, and this is a program that keeps raising the bar, on the field and off it, as the No. 1 public HBCU in the latest U.S. News rankings. One bad final minute shouldn’t define a historic weekend in Greensboro.
