After serving more than 16 years behind bars, Harlem rap icon Max B was released from Northern State Prison in Newark, New Jersey on Sunday, November 9, stepping back into freedom — and straight into a celebration fit for a legend.

Video from the moment of his release shows Max greeted by a large crowd of friends and supporters, including longtime collaborator French Montana. The two shared an emotional embrace before someone from the group placed a massive diamond chain around Max’s neck — a symbolic reminder that the Wave God never lost his shine.

French Montana later posted:

“The Wave is finally home. God is great. Max B forever.”

From 75 Years to Freedom

Max B (born Charly Wingate) was originally sentenced to 75 years in prison in 2009 for his role in a 2006 robbery turned homicide in Fort Lee, New Jersey. In 2016, after a decade of legal battles, his sentence was reduced to 20 years following a plea deal to aggravated manslaughter.

Now, after nearly 17 years in custody, Max walks free under five years of supervised release in New York — a second chance long awaited by the hip-hop world that never stopped shouting “Free Max B.”
