Fifteen years ago today, on November 1, 2011, Wale released Ambition, his second studio album. It came out through Allido Records, Maybach Music Group and Warner Bros. Records, according to Wikipedia, and it marked the DC rapper’s first album with Rick Ross’s MMG.
The MMG Era Arrives
Rick Ross served as executive producer, and the beat list ran deep: Lex Luger, DJ Toomp, Diplo, T-Minus, Tha Bizness, Kore and more. It was a sound built for that moment, when MMG was one of the hottest crews in rap and every release felt like an event.
The rollout was heavy. “That Way,” “Chain Music” and “Bait” all arrived ahead of the album, followed by “Lotus Flower Bomb” featuring Miguel and “Focused” featuring Kid Cudi. “Sabotage” with Lloyd went to urban radio in early 2012.
Standout Tracks
“Lotus Flower Bomb” is the one that still gets run back. It’s a slow-burning love record with Miguel on the hook, and it showed Wale could make women’s anthems without losing his pen. “Bait” brought the energy and lived a second life as the theme music for MLW Fusion from 2018 to 2021. “Focused” with Cudi gave the album a more reflective lane.
The Numbers
Ambition debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 with 164,000 copies in its first week, Wale’s first top-ten debut in the U.S. It hit No. 1 on both the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and Top Rap Albums charts. By June 2013 it had sold 482,000 copies in the U.S., and the RIAA certified it gold in February 2016. Critics were warm but not unanimous: it holds a 69 on Metacritic, which signals generally favorable reviews.
The IAHHM Take
Ambition is the moment Wale went from blog-era favorite to a real commercial force. The MMG run around it defined an era, with Meek Mill’s Dreams and Nightmares landing a year later. Wale has always been one of the most thoughtful writers of his class, and this album proved thoughtful could sell.
Fifteen years later, what’s your pick from Ambition: “Lotus Flower Bomb,” “Bait” or a deep cut? Let us know.
