Standoff Over: Hurricanes Bring Back Alexander Nikishin on a One-Year Deal

The Carolina Hurricanes and defenseman Alexander Nikishin finally have a deal. The defending Stanley Cup champs announced Sunday that Nikishin signed a one-year, $3 million contract, ending a long standoff that had kept him off the ice so far this season, as reported by ClutchPoints.

General manager Eric Tulsky kept it simple in his statement: “We’re glad that Alexander is returning to our group.” He also admitted, “This has been a long process.” The deal came after trade rumors, including a report linking Nikishin to a Western Conference team.

Why He Matters

Carolina drafted Nikishin 69th overall in 2020. He became one of the best defensemen in Russia’s KHL, putting up 55 points in 65 games for SKA St. Petersburg in 2022-23 and leading the team with 56 points the next year. After his KHL contract was terminated in April 2025, he signed a two-year entry-level deal with the Canes.

His rookie season delivered. Nikishin played 81 games, scored 11 goals with 22 assists and made the NHL All-Rookie Team, then played 17 playoff games on the run to Carolina’s first Cup since 2006.

The IAHHM Take

One year at $3 million is a bridge deal, plain and simple. Both sides get to skip a long-term fight right now and revisit it next summer. For Raleigh, that’s a win: the Canes get an All-Rookie blueliner back for a title defense without locking in a price they didn’t like.

The pressure is on Nikishin now. A big year sets him up for a real payday. A slow start after missing camp time could make next summer’s talks even tougher.

Canes fans, did the front office handle this right, or should they have locked him up long-term? Tell us below.
