On This Day in 2002: ‘Paid in Full’ Hit Theaters and Became a Hood Classic

On October 25, 2002, Paid in Full opened in theaters. It didn’t make much money. It didn’t win over many critics. And it still turned into one of the most quoted, most rewatched films in hip hop history.

What It Was

Directed by Charles Stone III and written by Matthew Cirulnick and Thulani Davis, Paid in Full follows Ace, a quiet Harlem laundry worker who gets pulled into the 1980s crack trade. It was produced by Damon Dash, Jay-Z, Brett Ratner, Azie Faison and Steve Rifkind, with Roc-A-Fella Films among the production companies.

The story is loosely based on three real Harlem figures: Azie Faison, Rich Porter and Alpo Martinez. On screen they became Ace (Wood Harris), Mitch (Mekhi Phifer) and Rico (Cam’ron).

The cast ran deep. Regina Hall played Keisha, Esai Morales played Lulu, and Chi McBride, Kevin Carroll and Elise Neal all had key roles. Doug E. Fresh even showed up as himself.

The Scenes Everybody Remembers

Ask anybody who grew up on this movie and they’ll tell you: Cam’ron as Rico is the reason it lives forever. Killa Cam wasn’t a trained actor, but he played Rico with a cold, flashy menace that people still quote word for word. Wood Harris gave Ace a calm, watchful center, and Mekhi Phifer’s Mitch carried the charm and the heartbreak.

The film also nailed the look and feel of ’80s Harlem. Even critics who didn’t love the story praised the performances and the setting.

The Numbers

Per Wikipedia, the film was made on a $7.5 million budget and earned about $3.1 million at the box office. Reviews were mixed: it sits at 53% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Roger Ebert gave it 2.5 out of 4 stars.

The soundtrack, Dame Dash Presents Paid in Full/Dream Team, came out on Roc-A-Fella and Def Jam that same month. It peaked at No. 53 on the Billboard 200, No. 10 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and No. 2 on Soundtrack Albums. Disc one leaned on classics like Eric B. & Rakim’s “Paid in Full” and BDP’s “The Bridge Is Over.” Disc two was pure Roc: “Champions” brought together Dame Dash, Kanye West, Beanie Sigel, Cam’ron, Young Chris and Twista, and the song later showed up as a bonus track on Kanye’s The College Dropout.

The Legacy

Box office be damned, Paid in Full found its people on DVD, bootlegs and cable reruns. It’s now a certified cult classic and a blueprint for street dramas that followed. In 2025, 50 Cent announced he was developing a TV series based on the film, with Cam’ron attached as an executive producer.

Twenty-four years later, the question still starts debates at every cookout: Ace, Mitch or Rico? Tell us who you riding with.
