Hip Hop on Screen: What to Watch This Weekend (Oct. 23–25)

Need something to watch this weekend? From a Wu-Tang mystery on Netflix to a West Coast rap drama heading into its finale, here’s what’s new on screens that ties back to hip hop, Black culture and sports, plus where to watch each one.

‘The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable’ (Netflix)

Where to watch: Netflix, streaming now (premiered Oct. 16)

If you missed it last weekend, run it now. Oscar winner Joanna Natasegara’s documentary, which premiered at Sundance, follows Tarik Azzougarh, a Dutch Moroccan Wu-Tang superfan known as Cilvaringz, who worked his way into the Clan’s inner circle and became the driving force behind Once Upon a Time in Shaolin. That’s the one-copy album sold at auction in 2015 that can’t be commercially released until 2103. RZA appears and executive produces, and Martin Shkreli, who bought the album, is in it too.

‘Ali G: Who Iz I?’ (In Theaters)

Where to watch: In theaters Friday, Oct. 23 (Amazon MGM Studios)

Sacha Baron Cohen brings back Ali G, his hip-hop-obsessed alter ego, for his first big-screen run in 20 years. Like Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, it was shot in secret and mixes scripted scenes with real people who don’t know Ali G isn’t real. It’s rated R.

‘By Any Means’ (Digital)

Where to watch: Buy or rent on Prime Video, Apple TV and Fandango at Home (digital release Oct. 20). Amazon lists it at $24.99 to buy and $19.99 to rent.

Directed by Elegance Bratton (The Inspection), this true-story thriller stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as a young Black FBI agent who teams up with a notorious mob hitman, played by Mark Wahlberg, to investigate the murders of civil rights leaders in 1966 Mississippi. Giancarlo Esposito plays civil rights leader Vernon Dahmer, with Nicole Beharie, LisaGay Hamilton and LaChanze also in the cast. No Paramount+ date has been announced yet.

‘The Drop: A Snowfall Saga’ (FX/Hulu)

Where to watch: FX, streaming on Hulu. Season 1 finale airs Tuesday, Oct. 27.

The Snowfall spinoff picks up as the crack era takes hold in L.A. Gail Bean returns as Wanda Bell, who believes West Coast rap can reshape American culture, and Isaiah John returns as Leon Simmons, who wants out of the streets. Brandon Mychal Smith plays label owner Darryl “DG” Grant. Use the weekend to catch up before the eight-episode season wraps.

‘Kordell Stewart: Slash & Burn’ (HBO)

Where to watch: HBO, Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 9 p.m. ET, and streaming on HBO Max

Part of HBO and NFL Films’ “NFL Shorts” collection, this 40-minute doc looks back at “Slash,” one of the most electric players of the ’90s, and the malicious rumor that followed him for decades. Kordell Stewart sits down alongside Bill Cowher, Jerome Bettis, Mike Mularkey and journalist LZ Granderson. Brian Rivera directs.
