Anthony Davis went for 34 points and 12 rebounds in his Wizards debut, a 128-116 win over the Milwaukee Bucks at Capital One Arena, and Trae Young is already campaigning for his big man. “I want to help him get MVP,” Young said, as first reported by ClutchPoints.
Davis shot 11-of-20 from the field and 11-of-14 at the line, and added 4 assists, 2 steals and a block. Young ran the show with 20 points, 13 assists and 2 steals. Trae said he wasn’t surprised at all after watching Davis’ offseason and preseason work: “I just knew he was going to be ready.” He also called AD “a top-75 player for a reason.”
The IAHHM Take
Context makes this one hit harder. Davis missed all of last season with multiple injuries, and Young played only five games for Washington after the Wizards traded for both of them before the deadline. Together they bring 14 All-Star appearances to a franchise that hasn’t had much to cheer about lately.
AD also had his name in offseason trade rumors, but he has said he wants to stay and help make the Wizards respectable again. Night one, mission accomplished.
Now the reality check: MVP is a long season, and these two have to stay on the floor. If they do, a healthy Trae-and-AD pick-and-roll is a problem for anybody in the East, especially in an opening week when the new-look Sixers and other contenders are still figuring themselves out.
Up next, Kawhi Leonard and the Raptors come to D.C. on Friday after their own statement win.
Real talk: is AD a legit MVP candidate in Washington, or is this just opening-night hype?
