The 2026-27 NBA season tips off this afternoon in Detroit, where the Pistons host the Boston Celtics at 3 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock. As first laid out by ClutchPoints, Boston opens as a 1-point road favorite with the total at 222 (BetOnline odds at time of writing; lines move, so check your book).
What Changed Since Last Spring
Detroit was the best team in the East last season at 60-22, including 32-9 at home. The Pistons climbed out of a 3-1 hole to beat Orlando, then lost a seven-game series to Cleveland.
Boston went 56-26 but let a 3-1 first-round lead slip away against Philadelphia. Then came the big summer swing: Jaylen Brown went to the Sixers in a deal that brought back Paul George and draft compensation, and Boston added Mitchell Robinson and Mike Conley.
Detroit lost Tobias Harris to San Antonio, brought in John Collins, Taurean Prince and Isaiah Joe, and locked up Jalen Duren and Ausar Thompson with extensions. The Pistons also swept all three meetings last season, the last one a 104-103 nail-biter in January.
Injury report: Boston’s Devin Carter is out. Detroit’s Taurean Prince is a game-time decision.

The IAHHM Take: Best Bets
Boston was the second-best team against the spread last year (49-33) and allowed the fewest points in the league (107.2 per game). Detroit led the NBA in steals at 10.4 a night, and Boston turned it over less than anybody (12.4). Something has to give.
ClutchPoints’ Richard Pereira likes Celtics -1 and the Over 222. We’re riding with the Over. Two good defenses, sure, but opening-night legs, a lot of new faces still learning each other, and a Detroit crowd that’s going to be loud from the jump usually means a game with some pace. On the side, we lean Detroit at home. Last season’s 3-0 sweep wasn’t an accident, and Boston without Brown is a real question until we see it work.
So who you got: Cade and the Pistons proving last year was no fluke, or a retooled Boston stealing one on the road? For more on how the East is shaping up, read our breakdown of the Cavs betting on James Harden and continuity.
