The Wu-Tang Clan’s million-dollar mystery finally gets its movie, 50 Cent steps into a video game, and Mike Tyson tells his story in four parts. Here’s what’s new on screens this week that ties back to hip hop, Black culture and sports, plus where to watch.
The Disciple: A Wu-Tang Fable
Where to watch: Netflix, streaming now (Oct. 16)
This is the story behind Once Upon a Time in Shaolin, the Wu-Tang album recorded in secret over six years and sold at a 2015 auction for a reported $2 million, with terms that bar its release until 2103. The film follows Tarik Azzougarh, the Dutch-Moroccan superfan known as Cilvaringz, who worked his way into the Wu’s inner circle and drove the project. Oscar winner Joanna Natasegara directs, and RZA is an executive producer. It premiered at Sundance earlier this year.
Street Fighter
Where to watch: In theaters now (opened Oct. 16)
Paramount and Legendary’s live-action Street Fighter hits theaters this weekend, and 50 Cent plays Balrog, the boxer famously modeled on Mike Tyson. Kitao Sakurai directs, with Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Callina Liang as Chun-Li, Eric André as announcer Don Sauvage and Orville Peck as Vega. Box Office Pro has it tracking for a $25 million to $35 million opening.
TYSON
Where to watch: Netflix, all four episodes streaming now (released Oct. 13)
Speaking of Iron Mike, Netflix’s four-part docuseries covers the whole arc: youngest heavyweight champion in history, prison, money and substance struggles, and the comeback. It’s directed by Floyd Russ, who also made Untold: Malice at the Palace, and it leans on archival footage and interviews with Tyson himself.
Once Upon a Time in Harlem
Where to watch: Select theaters, limited release starting Oct. 16
In August 1972, filmmaker William Greaves gathered legends of the Harlem Renaissance at Duke Ellington’s Harlem home and filmed them talking, debating and remembering friends like Zora Neale Hurston. The footage sat unfinished for decades. His son David completed the film, and his granddaughter Liani produced it. On screen: Eubie Blake, Richard Bruce Nugent, photographer James Van Der Zee and more. This is the roots of the culture, on 16mm.
Seriously Single Too
Where to watch: Netflix (Oct. 16)
The South African rom-com sequel brings back best friends Dineo and Noni, who face a big fear when Noni’s boyfriend proposes.
OWN Spotlight: What Black Men Say vs. What Black Women Hear
Where to watch: HBO Max (Oct. 17)
Iyanla Vanzant’s OWN special lands on HBO Max this weekend.
