YouTube Music Is Now Labeling AI Songs, and Auto-Tune Gets a Pass

YouTube Music started labeling AI-generated songs on October 14, and the rules draw a clear line between AI making your record and AI touching it up, as reported by AllHipHop.

A badge shows up on the player page, and tapping it explains what role AI played in the track. YouTube says the labels are coming to the main YouTube app too. They are based on disclosures from music partners plus YouTube’s own detection tools.

Partners choose one of three tags:

  • Fully Gen AI: a song made from a prompt, with AI creating both the beat and the voice.
  • Partly Gen AI: for example, an AI-generated bassline under live vocals and instruments, or AI help with verses or a melody before the artist records. A fully human song with an AI-made music video also lands here.
  • No Gen AI: using Auto-Tune to fix a note or an AI tool to master a track does not count as AI creation.

The IAHHM Take

This is the right line to draw. Hip hop has always been built on technology, from drum machines and samplers to Auto-Tune, and nobody should catch a label for using studio tools. The real question is who is doing the creating, and a badge that separates a prompt-generated song from an artist who used AI to clean up a mix actually tells fans something.

The industry has been moving this way. In July, the IFPI, RIAA and other music groups proposed voluntary “AI-Generated” and “AI-Assisted” labels for recordings, and Tidal already lets listeners turn off fully AI-generated tracks, which cannot earn royalties there. YouTube’s approach goes further by covering lyrics, melodies and videos.

The culture is split on all of it. AllHipHop noted that Swizz Beatz backed Timbaland’s move into AI, while Young Guru warned about what it means for working singers, writers and producers.

One catch: a label only works if the disclosure is honest, and part of this system depends on partners telling the truth. So, would an AI badge change whether you run a song back? Or does a hit just hit?
