Georgia Finally Wins in Tuscaloosa, and Kirby Smart Says the Quiet Part About the SEC

Georgia went into Tuscaloosa and beat Alabama 20-17 on Saturday, handing the Crimson Tide their first loss of the season and giving Kirby Smart something he’d never done before: a regular-season win over Alabama as Georgia’s head coach.

As first reported by ClutchPoints, it was also Georgia’s first win in Tuscaloosa since 2007. The Bulldogs are now 6-0.

How the Dawgs Did It

Georgia trailed 14-10 at halftime, then the defense took over. Alabama managed just three points after the break while Georgia put up 10. Tide quarterback Keelon Russell went 16-of-30 for 185 yards and a touchdown with no picks, adding 41 rushing yards on nine carries, and Smart gave him his props for being tough to contain.

Smart’s postgame message was pure SEC: “And another week in the SEC, ’cause humility is a week away,” he said. “So it’s gonna be physical. Gonna be tough.”

The IAHHM Take

Smart came up under Nick Saban, and for years Alabama in the regular season was the one wall he couldn’t get over. Breaking through on the road in Bryant-Denny is a real milestone for this program.

But notice he’s not taking a victory lap. “Humility is a week away” is the most SEC sentence ever spoken, and Saturday proved it. The same day Georgia won in Tuscaloosa, unranked Oklahoma knocked off No. 1 Texas in the Red River Rivalry. Nobody in this league is safe.

For Alabama and Kalen DeBoer, the noise is already loud, with Skip Bayless declaring DeBoer has “lost it,” per ClutchPoints. That’s a lot after one three-point loss, but that’s the standard in Tuscaloosa.

Is Georgia the best team in the country right now? Make your case.
