Drake Maye answered the questions about his slow start, and he did it in Buffalo. The Patriots quarterback led a late comeback to beat the previously unbeaten Bills 29-26 in Week 4, as first reported by ClutchPoints.
Maye went 22-of-37 for 269 yards, three touchdowns and an interception, and ran for 54 yards. The game-winner came on third-and-5 near the Bills’ 23. Maye rolled right under pressure and found Efton Chism, who made a one-handed catch in the end zone. Maye then hit Rhamondre Stevenson for the two-point conversion. Craig Woodson sealed it by intercepting Josh Allen.
The IAHHM Take
Through three weeks, Maye was throwing too many picks and the talk was getting loud. The easy move would have been to play it safe. He didn’t. He stayed aggressive with the game on the line, and that’s what franchise quarterbacks do.
The crazy part is he did it without AJ Brown. Romeo Doubs had six catches for 58 yards and two touchdowns, Hunter Henry added 62 yards, and Mack Hollins chipped in 53. Nobody is going to mistake that group for the best in the league, and Maye still made it work.
New England is 2-2, and Buffalo took its first loss in its new stadium. The Bills are still the team to beat in the AFC East, but a young QB who can win a shootout at Buffalo just changed the conversation in that division.
And yes, Josh Allen threw the pick that ended it. That’s the downside of being a gunslinger. Sometimes the other team’s young gunslinger wins.
Is this the game that makes Drake Maye a star, or are we overreacting to one Sunday?
