This week’s screen lineup has a little of everything: a rap festival comedy, the next chapters of a JAY-Z docuseries, a new Tyler Perry movie and a Mahershala Ali film critics are raving about. Here’s what to watch this weekend and where to find it.
“Rolling Loud: The Movie” (In Theaters)
Where to watch: In theaters starting Friday, Oct. 2 (Ketchup Entertainment).
Owen Wilson plays an overprotective dad who sneaks his 13-year-old son into Rolling Loud Miami to bond with him. It was filmed at the real festival in December 2024 and features music appearances from Travis Scott, Sexyy Red, Ty Dolla $ign and Ski Mask the Slump God. Matt Rife co-stars, Jeremy Garelick directs and the film is billed as inspired by a true story.
Heads-up: the first teaser drew criticism in May because of Travis Scott’s involvement, given the 2021 Astroworld tragedy.
“JAŸ-Z In 8,” Chapters 5 and 6 (HBO)
Where to watch: HBO and HBO Max. New chapters land Friday, Oct. 2, with the finale (Chapters 7 and 8) set for Oct. 9.
The eight-part series has Hov in conversation with Rick Rubin, using specific songs as the entry point to talk through his lyrics, writing process and influences across three decades. It skips the usual birth-to-now biography format. If you’re behind, Chapters 1 through 4 are already streaming.
Tyler Perry’s “Doing Life” (Netflix)
Where to watch: Netflix, starting Friday, Oct. 2.
Tyler Perry wrote and directed this romantic drama about Anika, a struggling single mom (Naomi Baker of “All American: Homecoming”), and a reformed ex-con (Jay Reeves of “The Six Triple Eight”) who connect while trying to rebuild their lives. Danielle Moné Truitt, Tamberla Perry and Karen Obilom are also in the cast.
“Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother” (In Theaters)
Where to watch: In theaters (Amazon MGM Studios). It opened in limited release on Sept. 25, so check local listings.
Mahershala Ali stars as Latif, a devoutly religious hitman racing across Houston to protect his kids after his wife dies. Giancarlo Esposito, Tiffany Boone, Tramell Tillman and John Cho round out the cast, and Bassam Tariq directs. It’s sitting at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes as of this week.
New to Netflix: Hip Hop and Black Classics
Where to watch: Netflix, added Oct. 1.
- “8 Mile”: Eminem’s film debut and still the gold standard for battle-rap movies.
- “Moonlight”: Barry Jenkins’ Best Picture winner.
- “Are We There Yet?”: Ice Cube on the worst road trip ever.
- “Bring It On”: The Clovers still deserved that win.
- “The Equalizer”: Denzel doing Denzel things.
For the Sports Heads
- “Schumacher ’94: The Birth of a Legend”: Netflix, Oct. 2. A documentary on Michael Schumacher’s first F1 title season.
- Lions vs. Panthers, Sunday Night Football: Sunday, Oct. 4, 8:20 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock, live from Charlotte.
