Former New England Patriots kicker Adam Vinatieri built his legendary career on delivering in freezing, high-stakes moments. Years after stepping away from the gridiron, the NFL icon took that reputation to extreme heights, quite literally.
On Tuesday, the four-time Super Bowl champion officially claimed a Guinness World Record for the highest altitude field goal in history, sending a kick through the uprights at 3454 meters (11,332 feet) above sea level on the Jungfraujoch in the Swiss Alps. Standing on snow-covered ground against the scenic backdrop known as the “Top of Europe,” Vinatieri proved his leg still has plenty of power.
“Snow is simply part of my time with the Patriots,” Vinatieri said. “But kicking a field goal at 3,454 meters is something completely different from anything I’ve ever seen in the NFL. You feel the altitude with every breath you take, your heart rate is different, your rhythm is different.”
An official Guinness World Record adjudicator certified the achievement on site. The event was organized alongside the Patriots to build excitement for the franchise’s upcoming international regular-season clash against the Detroit Lions in Munich, Germany.
For football fans, seeing Vinatieri master harsh winter conditions is nothing new. Over a storied 24-season career split between New England and the Indianapolis Colts, he established himself as the most clutch kicker in league history. Vinatieri retires as the NFL’s all-time leading scorer with 2,673 points while converting 599 out of 715 career field goal attempts (83.8%) and holding the postseason scoring record with 238 points.
From his iconic 45-yard blizzard kick in the 2001 playoffs to multiple Super Bowl game-winners. Vinatieri has always shined in sub-zero weather. Now, even in retirement, the legendary placekicker continues to prove that distance and freezing temperatures are no match for his right leg.
