It’s going to be a long offseason for De’Aaron Fox following his immense struggles in Game 5 of the 2026 NBA Finals between the San Antonio Spurs and the New York Knicks on Saturday night.
Fox concluded the ninth season of his NBA career, his second with the Spurs. He played a solid role in helping San Antonio return to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2014.
However, Fox significantly struggled throughout the championship series. He averaged 12.8 points per game but did so on woeful shooting splits of 34.2% from the field, including 25% from beyond the arc. In Game 5, he performed at his worst after putting up seven points and five rebounds on 3-of-15 shooting, including 1-of-8 from beyond the arc. This prompted an in-depth look into his lows throughout the series, via reporter Tomer Azarly.
“De’Aaron Fox in the NBA Finals: 24-of-70 FG (34.2%). 7-of-28 3PT (25%). Fox in the 4th quarters this series: 0-of-2 FG in Game 1. 2-of-2 FG in Game 2. 2-of-6 FG in Game 3. 1-of-5 FG in Game 4. 0-of-4 FG in Game 5,” Azarly wrote.
How De’Aaron Fox, Spurs played against Knicks
De’Aaron Fox and the Spurs will regret taking advantage of their strong starts throughout Games 1 through 5. As a result, they have to see the Knicks raise their banner to the rafters when next season starts.
New York started out slow as the team had in past games this series. But once again, their resilience shined in the spotlight. They slowly but surely pulled off the 18-point comeback against San Antonio to win their third title in franchise history and first since 1973.
Four players scored in double-digits for San Antonio in the win. Dylan Harper led the team in scoring with 25 points, five rebounds, four assists, and a block. Victor Wembanyama came next with 19 points and 14 rebounds, Julian Champagnie had 14 points and seven rebounds, while Devin Vassell provided 12 points and seven rebounds.
The Spurs enter the offseason with optimism but have questions to answer. They have plenty of cap space, presenting chances for them to land key free agents.
