It’s more than funny to think that three years ago, Travis Scott was accused of being worse than Iggy Azalea. In February of 2015, The Concourse accused Travis Scott of being a leech off other celebrities like Kid Cudi, Young Thug, and Kanye West. “The fact that Scott never got past that first young-artist imitation step but keeps moving down the industry assembly line anyway is much more the music industry's failure than it is his.” Three years ago, Travis Scott was being torn to shreds and now that we’ve entered the year 2018, it’s looking a little different.

Do you listen to Travis Scott for Lyrics or Production?

We may not look to him for lyricism, but luckily music has a rabbit hole of sub-categories to dive into. The 26-year old Rodeo rapper enhanced his creative powers while presenting us with a theatrical blessing. Travis Scott opened up the doors to his trippy, psychedelic, and festive world: Astroworld and each song gave us a fun surprise.

Just like in any life situation, you go into it without knowing everything, and you end up mouth open shocked. 11 out of 17 songs has a feature where Travis Scott does not display on the tracklist. Before Astroworld released, it was announced that he assembled a team of artists to help with his album. I recall a joke on Twitter suggesting that the album should have everyone on it since we’ve been waiting for so long. Well, artists like Gunna, 21 Savage, Stevie Wonder, Drake, Takeoff, Frank Ocean and more joined Travis Scott in composing Astroworld, not to mention producers like Tay Keith, Sonny Digital, Hit-Boy, Travis Scott himself, and more!

Young La Flame, He In Sicko Mode

“Who put this shit together? I’m the glue,” Travis Scott addresses demandingly on his most talked about song, Sicko Mode. Whether his inspiration was conceived through Kid Cudi or his creative mentor, Kanye West you have to admit that Astroworld’s effect bursts through the speaker or sound system and radiates a field of artistic energy. From the beat changes in Sicko Mode, the harmonica feature from Stevie Wonder in Stop Trying To Be God, the melodic chorus from Frank Ocean on Carousel, and the angelic appearances from Swae Lee, I was more than happy to be invited into Astroworld.

In 2013, Travis Scott told Billboard that he is a trifecta. From writing, making a beat, and performing everything that he does is solid, and where is the lie? “I design music; I don't produce it,” he added and Astroworld is the proof in the pudding.
