Teon Gibbs- These Are The Times(Full Album)

[adToAppearHere]

Where are you from ?

I'm originally from Botswana, but in 2010 I moved to Kelowna, BC Canada. I lived there until 2016 when I wanted to push the music to the next level and be in a slightly bigger market so I moved to Vancouver which is where I am now!

-How did the crew get started?

It started with me and KB (my videographer) we decided to connect and shoot a video and it turned a lot more heads than we expected. It's funny cause half the crew was in that first video – we used Connor's Jeep, Kaykamz's apartment and a lot of that community is how we grew. I guess it was a time when we were all trying new things, all trying to chase a dream. The energy was right and everyone involved works just as hard for themselves as they do each other.

-When and how did you get into music?

I been playing in bands, writing lyrics and producing music for almost 15 years, but it was almost always exclusively for others. after graduating from my audio engineering program in 2013 my eyes were opened to how so many artists or even people have a vision but are too afraid to really pursue it you know. Like whether it's the hard work, the sacrifice or just the business – most people don't know how much it takes to really go for it.

-How did you choose your rap name ?

I used to play in bands right. I played a few different instruments. So I'd switch between instruments when needed and people would say “T on bass”, “T on keys”, “T on Gibson”. I liked the way it sounded. T on Gibson. Then I it just became Teon Gibbs

How will you change the industry?

Western Canada is a fairly untapped market. I don't have to be ‘the man” (of course I want to be) but I do want to be integral leader in the movement opening eyes to what we have to offer. The truth I understand there are strength in numbers. If one of us takes things to the next level, a lot more avenues and opportunities open up. I also want to create networking and mentorship opportunities. Being an indie artist is hard – the more opportunities the better.

-Who is in your mainstream top 5?

no particular order
J Cole
Kanye
Drake
-What motivated or inspired you to record your last project?
On a sonic level, trap soul, if you're reading this and sound scape of Toronto. These Are the Times was meant to be a more honest and slightly more thought provoking version of some of the current sounds. I want it to warm up the palette for whatever I create next!

As far as content or emotion. The artist's journey, the pain of defeat, the strength it takes to make it through adversity, the pain of loss, the numbness of depression and the hunger to want to win!

-Has there been any time in your journey where you felt like pursuing something else instead of music?

Never by choice! I mean, whatever I gotta do to keep my head above water – I'll do! But the move and the focus has always been music.

Whose side were you on.. Biggie Or Pac?

Biggie is the better technical rapper but damn… Pac been my guy!

If you had one song of yours to perform on national tv which would it be?

Rookie Szn All Star!

If you were offered a perfect distribution/sponsorship from any major company in america which company would suit you and your brand the most?

Ideally becoming a Spotify sponsored independent artist would be the dream. Having a streaming company like Spotify give me the advertising space to grow my brand while remaining creatively in control. That's the dream. But essentially anywhere I can grow honestly. I get vexed when success is bought and a real following is not cultivated.

-What is your favorite movie? Favorite actor?

Denzel is the GOAT

Shutter Island is one of my favourite movies ever!

-Tell me some of your biggest and/or most enjoyable moments so far?

Black Box Theatre in Kelowna in May was incredible! All those people who knew the lyrics. It was a chance to see the growth. It was blessed.

-What equipment and software do you use to record/produce?

Logic X
Name 3 things that make you unique as an artist?
1) Honesty. I'm not trying to lie in my content and I'm not trying to lie about my following.
2) Musical IQ, I've been playing for year,I've been recording for years and I've been producing for years. That gives me a keen ear

3) My story is unique. Being from Botswana (and living in Southern Africa for most of my life), living in England for 4 years and being here now. I have a unique perspective.

-Where do you see yourself going with this? What are your big plans?

One more fun length project before the year is out, pushing the boundary on what an independent artist can do. Continue pushing for more Spotify curated placements and finally going on tour. A smart tour, smaller venues, travel with a band and have the flexibility to play night clubs, jazz clubs, bars, house shows or or even podcasts and radio shows. Multiple cities, multiple bags!

-Any projects in the works?

For the Soul is coming. That's the more introspective version of these are the times. These are gonna be my series that I keep revisiting! I'll work on a full album when I can get these sounds blended.

But for now expect trap, Neo soul, gospel, jazz and some introspection!

-What are your rates for features?

Depends on the project depends on the artist but a plan can always be made! Just hit me up and we can work it out.
