The Come Up: Producer Tavaras Jordan

This article has taken some time to complete, but I would love for you guys to take the time and allow me to introduce possibly the next big producer out of NC since 9th Wonder. Tavaras Jordan, The New Art Society associate, is from Johnsonville, NC a small town outside of Fayetteville. I first got wind of Tavaras Jordan at the release party for Ahmad Latif's “The Peace And Love Project”. Born into a musical family, Jordan's grandmother is the Minister Of Music at his childhood church where he began playing the drums and keys at the age of 7. Tavaras began developing his own personal relationship with music and eventually gravitated to producing where he developed the name “Diversity”. “I came up with it in high school to describe my style sound as a producer. By the time I got to college and became more aware of marketing, I chose to use my government name, Tavaras Jordan. No one can ever confuse me with another producer.”

Tavaras Jordan has never wavered from this idea of being a producer no matter what obstacles have been thrown at him, owning his own production equipment since the age of 16. “I plan to change the industry by being a bridge that keeps the 90s hip-hop/r&b vibe alive today in the 2010s. I'm also real big on history and having an appreciation for the music before my era. Coming from a gospel background instilled the foundation of black music in my music, and I  want to be one of the younger producers to lead my generation in making research and history awareness important.”

The ECU Graduate already has beat placements with Nice Kicks, Ahmad Latif, Keeping Up With The Kardashians, and Total Divas. Jordan also hopes to gain placements with Netflix, Video Games, partnering with Cartoon Network and more. This avid researcher and student from the game aims to stand out in the music industry with his gospel upbringing, giving his music more of a soulful sound. As well as his professionalism and his natural studious and willingness to learn and appreciate his craft. Tavaras has aspirations to be a pivotal piece of the hip-hop community by making research and history awareness more important. Jordan currently lists his TOP 5 Producers as such: Manny Fresh, Kanye West, Drumma Boy, Just Blaze, and Timbaland. Expect a big year for Tavaras Jordan as we now handle his marketing and press releases. Connect with Tavaras Jordan and stream beats via SoundCloud below.

Can you break down your producing process?

If I'm making an original track, I always start with the melody. I never want my drums to dictate the beat. When sampling, I try to find records that aren't generally recogizable.

-When and how did you get into music?

I grew up in a musical family. My grandmother is the Minister of Music at the church we attend. Through her I began playing drums and keys at a very young age. By 7, I was already playing drums on my own during service.

-How did you choose your producer name ?

My original name was Diversity. I came up with it in high school to descibe my style sound as a producer. By the time I got to college and became more aware of marketing, I chose to use my government name, Tavaras Jordan. No one can ever confuse me with another producer.

How will you change the industry?

I plan to change the industry by being a bridge that keeps the 90s hip-hop/r&b vibe alive today in the 2010s. I'm also real big on history and having an appreciation for the music before my era. Coming from a gospel background instilled the foundation of black music in my music, and I  want to be one of the younger producers to lead my generation in making research and history awareness important.

-Who is in your mainstream top 5?

Producers? I'd have to go with Mannie Fresh, Kanye West, Drumma Boy, Just Blaze and Timbaland.

-What motivated or inspired you to record your last project?

The last project I produced was Ville Promises by Ahmad Latif. We've been working since high school and that was just another project we put our all into. He's the only artist so far that I've collaborated with long-term.

-Has there been any time in your journey where you felt like pursuing something else instead of music?

Never. Ever since a kid, I knew that I wanted to be a producer. I got my first drum set at 6, a drum machine at 11, and a bedroom production setup at 16. Being a musician has always been in me.

Whose side were you on.. Biggie Or Pac?

Production-wise, I'm on Pac's side. I have this debate all the time. They both had cool beats, but I have to go with Pac.

If you were offered a perfect distribution/sponsorship from every major company in America which company would suit you and your brand the most?

I think that Cartoon Network and I could do great business. I pay attention to detail, and I've noticed that cartoons have more hip-hop influenced background music these days. I'd love to team with them and come up with some cool music for a cartoon or commercials.

-What is your favorite movie? Favorite actor?

My favorite movie is The Shawshank Redemption. My favorite actor is Denzel Washington.

-Tell me some of your biggest and/or most enjoyable moments so far?

My biggest moments so far would be recieving royalty checks every quarter. The amounts are nothing crazy, but definitely enough to motivate me to keep moving forward.

-What equipment and software do you use to record/produce?

I use FL Studio as my DAW with tons of drum kits and VSTs. I also use an M-Audio Keystation 49 MIDI controller and a HP Notebook 15.

-Name 3 things that make you unique as a producer?

I come from a gospel background which gives my music a more melodic, smooth feel. Also, I did my research when I was coming up on genres before hip-hop to get a better understanding of where music is, and where its going. Lastly, I draw inspiration for personal experiences, whether its something good or bad. I channel all of my energy into the music.

-Where do you see yourself going with this? What are your big plans?

I see myself expanding across all spectrums of audio/visual content. I want to eventually have instrumentals placed in video games, movies, commercials, Netflix original content, etc.

-Any projects in the works?

Ahmad Latif and I are working on his 5th project, The Art Collective EP. Also, I have a few TV placements on the table from different TV shows.

-What are your rates for beats?

Non-exclusive leases start at $200.
